Nathan’s journey to Development and Estimation Manager

When Nathan Bennett moved to Darwin, he thought it would be a temporary change, with just a year away from Perth. But nearly ten years later, Darwin has become home, and Jaytex Construction has become the foundation of Nathan's professional life.

Now, as he steps into the role of Development and Estimation Manager, Nathan reflects on his journey and the responsibilities that come with his new position.

"I started in the industry when I was 17 as a plasterer," Nathan shared, recounting his early days in Perth.

For five years, he honed his skills as an apprentice and then as a qualified tradesman. However, his aspirations didn’t stop there. While still working on-site, Nathan began studying, eventually earning his Certificate IV in Estimating.

This qualification opened doors to a new path, and he transitioned into the role of an estimator and scheduler for a residential builder.

“I did that for five years as well, and during that time, I studied my Builder’s Diploma,” he explained.

In search of new opportunities, Nathan moved to Darwin and, after a couple of years, joined Jaytex.

Over the past seven years, Nathan has witnessed and contributed to the company’s growth in the Northern Territory.

He credits his growth within Jaytex to a shared vision with leadership and an early conversation with Managing Director Matthew Moss.

"I sat down with Matthew seven years ago, and seeing the evident upward trajectory Jaytex was on, I made it clear that I was keen to learn and grow with the company," he said.

As Development and Estimation Manager, Nathan is now accountable for all tenders, working closely with his team on estimation, procurement, and subcontracting.

“We handle all aspects of tendering with subcontractors and coordinate closely with consultants, engineers, architects, and more,” Nathan said.

Nathan’s approach to his work is deeply rooted in his hands-on experience.

“Being able to understand where subcontractors are coming from and how they think definitely helps,” he explained.

This understanding has been a key factor in his success, particularly in navigating the complexities of tendering and ensuring projects run smoothly from start to finish.

One of Nathan's early career highlights at Jaytex was working on the National Critical Care and Trauma Centre, a project born from the response to the Bali bombings.

The project featured an environmentally controlled warehouse and office, designed to accommodate a team of staff ready to respond to disasters.

More recently, Nathan has enjoyed working on the Haileybury Rendall boarding school and the SWELL Palmerston projects.

"Haileybury Rendall boarding school was truly impressive, offering more than just standard school facilities,” he recounted.

“It also featured well-designed living quarters, dining areas, activity spaces, and outdoor areas, all showcasing remarkable architectural elements.”

In addition to his hands-on role, Nathan continues to invest in his professional development. He’s currently pursuing a Diploma in Leadership and Management, a course he finds particularly beneficial.

“I felt it was the perfect timing to further build my leadership abilities by pursuing a diploma, focusing on practical skills to effectively engage and communicate with staff, clients, and subcontractors,” he said.

Nathan’s dedication and passion for the industry are evident in every aspect of his work. His favourite part of the job?

"Winning tenders," he said with a smile.

But it’s not just about the win, Nathan enjoys the process of working with the team through pre-construction, procurement, and all the way to handover.

“I love watching a building come from dirt, where it’s literally just sand, and turning it into this impressive, finished product that bring our clients’ vision to life,” he says fondly.

Outside of work, Nathan is committed to his local community, playing football for Pints Football Club and getting involved in various club activities.

His connection to the community mirrors his commitment to his work, where both are built on teamwork, resilience, and a genuine passion for what he does.

Looking back on his career, Nathan offers this advice to his younger self: “Anything is possible with a bit of hard work, commitment and drive.”

Nathan embodies the qualities that have made Jaytex successful in Darwin - genuine, resilient, and loyal. And with his leadership, Jaytex Construction is poised to continue its growth and success in the Northern Territory and beyond.
